You’ve seen them on celebrities. You’ve probably even seen them on friends or coworkers and thought, wow, their smile looks amazing. But you’re not quite sure what porcelain veneers are or if they could work for you.
At Horizon Family Dental Care in La Plata, we’ve helped countless patients transform their smiles with veneers. Here’s everything you need to know.

What Exactly Is a Porcelain Veneer?
Think of a veneer like a custom-made shell for your tooth. It’s a thin layer of high-quality porcelain that covers the front surface of your tooth. Once bonded in place, it looks completely natural, just like your own tooth, only better.
Porcelain veneers could fix a lot of problems in one shot:
- Discolored teeth that won’t respond to whitening
- Chipped or broken teeth
- Slightly crooked or uneven teeth
- Gaps between teeth that you’ve always hated
- Oddly shaped teeth that make you self-conscious
- Worn down teeth from years of grinding.
Veneers could give you a complete smile makeover.
How Do They Work?
The process usually takes two or three visits. The first appointment is a consultation. We sit down with you and talk about what bothers you about your smile. We look at your teeth and figure out how many veneers you need. Then we talk about shape, size, and color. We want you to walk out excited about what’s possible.
After agreeing to treatment, we start the preparation. This is where the magic happens. We gently shave off a tiny bit of enamel from the front of your teeth. Don’t worry; it’s a small amount, and you’ll be numb. Then we take impressions of your teeth and send them to the lab. You wear temporary veneers for about two weeks while your permanent ones are made.
After your veneers are crafted, you’ll return for one last placement appointment. Your temporary veneers come off. Your permanent veneers are carefully bonded to your teeth. We check the fit, the look, and your bite. If everything’s perfect, you could walk out with your brand new smile.
Are Veneers Right for You?
Veneers aren’t for everyone. Here’s who makes a great candidate:
- You’re unhappy with the look of your teeth: You don’t need to have a specific problem. Some patients just want a brighter, more uniform smile.
- Your teeth are mostly healthy: Veneers are a cosmetic solution. If you have active gum disease or large cavities, we need to treat those first.
- You don’t grind your teeth at night: Grinding can crack veneers. If you grind, we can make you a nightguard to protect them.
- You’re willing to care for them: Veneers aren’t indestructible. You need to brush, floss, and see your dentist regularly. But you don’t need any special cleaning products.
- You want a natural look: We don’t do “Hollywood white” unless you ask for it. We choose a color that looks natural with your skin tone and other teeth.
What’s the Downside?
Veneers are permanent. Once we remove that tiny bit of enamel, your tooth will always need a veneer. You can’t go back. Veneers cost more than other cosmetic options like bonding. But they last much longer, often 15 years or more with good care. And they’re not covered by insurance, since they’re cosmetic.
We’re upfront about all of this. We want you to make a decision you feel great about.
What Do Veneers Feel Like?
After the initial adjustment, they should feel just like your own teeth. You can eat and talk normally. You might forget they’re even there.
One patient told us she cried when she saw her new smile for the first time. Another said she finally stopped covering her mouth when she laughed. Another said he got a promotion because he finally had the confidence to speak up in meetings.
Veneers don’t just change your teeth. They change how you show up in the world.
