When your dentist says it’s time for X-rays, do you ever feel a tiny flicker of worry? Maybe you’ve heard something about radiation. Maybe you just don’t love the idea of those big machines. Or maybe you’re simply tired of being told you need them every year. Those feelings are normal. But dental X-rays are incredibly safe, and skipping them can actually put your smile at risk.
At Horizon Family Dental Care in La Plata, we want you to understand why we take X-rays and why you can feel completely comfortable with them.

What Are We Actually Looking For?
Your dentist can see a lot just by looking inside your mouth. But there’s a whole world hidden beneath the surface. X-rays let us see what our eyes can’t.
Here’s what we’re searching for:
- Cavities between your teeth: You know those tight spots where floss barely fits? Cavities love to hide there. By the time you feel one, it’s usually large. X-rays catch them when they’re tiny and easy to fix.
- Infections at the root: Sometimes a tooth looks fine on the outside, but underneath, there’s an abscess brewing. That’s a pocket of infection that can spread. X-rays help us find and treat it before it becomes an emergency.
- Bone loss: Gum disease doesn’t just affect your gums. It destroys the bone that holds your teeth in place. X-rays show us exactly how much bone is left and whether treatment is working.
- Hidden problems: Impacted wisdom teeth. Cysts. Tumors. Unusual anatomy. Most of these have no symptoms at first. X-rays help us catch them early when they’re easiest to manage.
How Much Radiation Are We Talking About?
A full set of dental X-rays exposes you to about the same amount of radiation as a short airplane flight. A single digital X-ray? Even less. For comparison, you get more radiation from spending time outside in the sun or even eating a banana (bananas contain natural radioactive isotopes).
Modern digital X-rays use up to 90% less radiation than the old film X-rays from decades ago. And we always use lead aprons and thyroid collars to protect the rest of your body. For most healthy adults, the benefit of finding a problem early far outweighs the tiny amount of radiation exposure.
How Often Do You Really Need X-Rays?
There’s no single answer that fits everyone.
If you have healthy teeth and no history of cavities, you might only need X-rays every couple of years. If you’re prone to decay, have gum disease, or are dealing with a specific problem, we might recommend them more often.
Children typically need X-rays more frequently than adults because their teeth and jaws are changing quickly. New patients usually get a full set so we have a complete picture of their oral health.
We don’t take X-rays just because it’s “time.” We take them because they’ll actually help us take better care of you.
What If You’re Pregnant?
This is another common concern. Routine dental X-rays can usually wait until after delivery. But if you have an urgent dental problem, like severe pain or a suspected infection, the risk of not treating it is almost always higher than the risk of a single X-ray with proper shielding.
Just tell us if you’re pregnant or might be. We’ll work with you and your doctor to make the safest choice for you and your family.
Knowledge Is Power
We don’t take X-rays because we enjoy making you sit still with things in your mouth. We take them because they help us find small problems before they become big, painful, expensive ones.
