Manual or Electric Toothbrush: Which is best for you?

Electric toothbrushes are all the rage! And for good reason with many dental experts claiming electric toothbrushes provide superior dental care. It’s true that electric toothbrushes are recommended for those who can’t do a good job of brushing with a manual toothbrush. But manual toothbrushes do have some advantages such as:

  • Cost – Manual toothbrushes are inexpensive and easier to access.
  • Less pressure on your teeth and gums – We can feel the amount of pressure we are using with a manual toothbrush. It can be difficult to gauge the amount of pressure being applied with an electric toothbrush. Too much pressure on our teeth can wear away tooth enamel, which can cause pain, sensitivity as well as an increased risk of tooth decay.
  • Simple to pack – Manual toothbrushes are easy to pack and transport for those business trips or family vacations. With a manual toothbrush there is no need for an electrical outlet to charge.
  • Better for kids – Learning proper dental and brushing techniques at a young age will encourage healthy lifelong habits of good oral hygiene.

Electric toothbrushes are more effective in removing plaque and are considered the better option to maintaining healthy gums. Whether you choose a manual or electric toothbrush our dental team encourages you to choose one with soft bristles and be sure to change the bristle attachment on the electric toothbrush when they have become worn down and if your not sure how you can tell – give us a call for more information. We also recommend that you change your manual toothbrush every three months or when the bristles are no longer straight and firm or after recovering from a cold.
